Edna Ferber - (1887 - 1968)
Like many writers from the Midwest, Edna Ferber was concerned with the glorification of America. Her novel So Big won the Pulitzer Prize in 1924. This was followed by Show Boat (which she called her "oil well" because of the money its stage and screen adaptations made her), Cimarron, Giant and Ice Palace, all of which were filmed. She also collaborated with George S. Kaufman on a number of plays.
"One afternoon Miss Ferber showed up at the Round Table in a new suit similar to the one Noel Coward was wearing. "You look almost like a man," Coward said as he greeted her. "So do you," replied Ferber. |
